How it works

Scan the code, and you are in

The host sits flat in the middle of the table and shows the shared game: the board, the piles, the dice. For the 22 games playable with phones in hand, the lobby shows a QR code; scanning it opens the game in each player’s own browser. Their phone shows only what is private to them, and everyone looks at the host for the table.

  • Nothing to install: it is a QR code and the phone’s own browser
  • A phone that sleeps or drops picks up exactly where it was on reopening the page. If one dies mid-game, the host issues a transfer code and another device takes over the seat
  • No internet needed: any Wi-Fi network works, even one with no connection to the outside world, and away from home a Personal Hotspot does the job
  • The host keeps itself awake during a game, and phones get a stay-awake toggle

The games

70 games. Seven free to keep.

Board, arcade, card, dice and learning games, every one with full rules built in. Seven games are free to keep and one purchase opens the rest. See how each looks with an iPad or an iPhone as the table, and tap any game with phones for a look at the players’ screens.

Pick your table

Best on an iPad, works on a phone

The best experience is an iPad flat on the table, with its big shared board and eleven-point touch screen. Everything also works with an iPhone as the host, with a few honest limitations:

  • A phone tracks five simultaneous touches to an iPad’s eleven and has less elbow room, so five of the biggest games seat fewer players on a phone host. Every other game seats the same on both
  • Go offers 9x9, 13x13 and the full 19x19 board on an iPad; a phone host plays 9x9, which is all a phone screen can hold
  • The drawing games’ easel takes Apple Pencil and finger both, with real palm rejection. iPad only, by nature
  • Phones joining as players have no such limits: any phone with a browser joins any phone game

Tournaments

Crown a champion. Hand out the wooden spoon.

A whole area of the app. Tournaments live alongside game history, survive app restarts mid-fixture, and pause between game nights. Six formats:

Event

A named stretch of time: a holiday, a weekend, a games night. Every game finished while it is counting goes on its leaderboard, whoever plays.

Championship

Pick players and games and the app builds the fixture list. Tap Play on a fixture and the lobby opens ready-seated.

League

Fixed players, chosen games, no fixtures: any qualifying game counts automatically whenever it is played. First to N wins can end it by itself.

Knockout cup

One game, a random draw, straight elimination. Rounds label themselves Final, Semi-finals, Quarter-finals.

Pick your weapon

Everyone nominates the game they fancy their chances at, then the whole group plays every nomination. Winning somebody else’s weapon is twice the bragging rights.

Lucky dip

Pick a pool of games and how many to play; the dip draws them at random. Nobody knows what is coming, but nothing outside the pool can come.

Fixtures tick themselves off; the lobby opens ready-seated.
  • Fixtures can be a single game, best of 3 or best of 5, and the game-over screen knows it is inside one: “game 1 of 3 played”, with a Next game button
  • A fixture’s lobby options are remembered, so a chosen question pack is picked once, not five times
  • Ending a tournament crowns the champion and hands the wooden spoon to last place
  • Every ended tournament shares as a one-page A4 PDF: champion card, ranked standings with avatars, a bar chart in each player’s colour, and the wooden spoon footnote. AirDrop it, message it, or print it

Leaderboards & stats

Built for gloating

Everything ever played on the host goes into a local history: no account, no cloud, just the family record, ready to settle who really is best at Yatzy.

  • Leaderboards by game and time range: all time, this year, last 30 days, today. A crown for first, a flame for anyone on a streak
  • Record scores per game: a hall of fame where records are broken, not shared
  • Tap any player for their lifetime page: win rate, longest streak, a trophy beside every record they hold, and a scores-over-time chart
  • The game-over screen prints each player’s lifetime line: “3 wins in 11 games, best 284”

Rules included

The arguments end here

Every one of the 70 games ships full rules, each with a common questions section, readable offline on the host and on every phone.

Rules everywhere

A book icon in the lobby and on every table screen, plus a rules index in Settings. Search prunes the page to matching passages.

Ask about the rules

On devices with Apple Intelligence, ask a plain-English question and get an answer grounded strictly in that game’s rule text. Entirely on device.

Send a rule to a phone

Long-press any passage on the host and send it to one player, or to all of them.

“Fine, fine”

The player’s phone shows the rule full screen: “The host would like you to read this rule”, with a dismiss button labelled Fine, fine. Argument settled.

Family friendly

Grown-ups decide what comes out of the box

Sensible controls for a family device, none of them getting in the way of games night.

Grown-ups controls

Behind Face ID or the device passcode: lock any game away and it disappears from the picker, tournaments and the rules entirely.

Rude-word filter

On by default in Wordsboard, so words you would not want read out at the table are simply not accepted. Switch it off for a household with no children.

Your own question packs

About 2,300 quiz questions ship in the box, and you can import your own packs from a file, a spreadsheet, or another family via AirDrop.

Made for little ones

A curated flag in the picker marks 17 games that work for small children, from Pairs and Snap to Snakes and Ladders.

The details

Little things that make it feel like games night

Avatars and colours

Every player has an emoji avatar and a chip colour that follows them everywhere: seat chips, phone screens, stats charts, the tournament PDF.

Matches, not just games

Many games play as a set, with cumulative totals and a match winner crowned. Yatzy defaults to its traditional six games.

Full score pads

Every game of a match keeps its full score pad, so the arguments have evidence.

Ticker-tape moments

Big moments get a proper celebration. A real Yatzy rains ticker tape.

Three deck designs

Pick from three deck colours in Settings and the cards re-skin on the host and every phone.

Table players

Someone without a phone can be added in the lobby; their controls appear on the host screen on their turn. Table and phone players mix freely.

Private by architecture

No internet, no accounts, no tracking

Not a promise buried in a policy: a consequence of how the app is built.

Everything on one device

The app hosts its own local server; nothing is ever fetched from the internet. Games, history, tournaments: all of it lives on the host.

No accounts, no tracking

Nothing to sign up for, nothing watching how your family plays. There is no server of ours to send anything to.

Phones join locally

Player phones talk directly to the host over your own network or hotspot. Nothing to install, nothing leaves the room.

Even the AI is offline

Rules questions are answered by Apple Intelligence on the device itself, so it works in a field with no signal at all.
